Bellefont-Belcier

Chais Château Belllefont Belcier

The Estate

Beautiful 18th-century residence

At the end of the 18th century, the estate belonged to Count Louis-François de Belcier, a member of a wealthy Bordeaux family. After establishing the vineyard, he then had the residence built in the early 19th century, as it still stands today; he named it Bellefont, a diminutive of "Belle Fontaine" (Beautiful Fountain), in reference to the numerous springs emerging from the clay-limestone hillside near the château.

The Faure family acquired the estate at the end of the 19th century. At that time, Bellefont-Belcier became one of the leading estates in the Bordeaux region, receiving numerous awards, including the only gold medal awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture to Bordeaux wines at the Concours Général Agricole in Paris in 1892. It was during the Faure era that the famous circular winery was built into the hillside, modern for its time, and the gravity-flow wine reception system was designed. Preserved intact since its construction, the winery is now one of the jewels of this property.

Major renovations were undertaken in the vineyard at the end of the 20th century.
Château Bellefont-Belcier was promoted to Grand Cru Classé in 2006.

Peter Kwok acquired the property in 2017.

The Terroir

Plateau and South Slope of Saint-Emilion

Château Bellefont-Belcier is located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes within the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, ideally situated on the renowned plateau and south slope, alongside Château Pavie, Château Larcis-Ducasse, and Château Tertre Roteboeuf.

The vineyard covers 14 hectares of contiguous vines. It is divided into three distinct areas: the limestone plateau, the clay-limestone south slope, and the clay-sandy foot of the slope.

On these different soil types, we find the three great red grape varieties of Bordeaux in the following proportions: 72% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, spread across 28 plots.

The average age of the vines is approximately 35 years.

Harvest & Winemaking

Meticulous Selection - Precision

Harvest dates vary depending on the vintage, and we adapt our picking plan to the individual plot or even the specific section of the vineyard, based on the optimal ripeness of the grapes. The harvest date is determined by a combination of several physiological and subjective criteria; tasting the grapes is an important step in our decision-making process. Our harvesting teams work in designated sections, defined the day before. After meticulous selection both in the vineyard and in the cellars, the sorted grapes are transferred to concrete tanks. Fermentation is carried out without the addition of sulfur (a minimal dose will be added at the end of aging), extraction is gentle, and temperatures remain moderate. Regular tasting of the tanks allows us to precisely determine the extraction programs and the optimal time for racking.

Ageing

Ageing in oak barrels

The wines of Château Bellefont-Belcier are aged in oak barrels for 14 to 18 months at a low and constant temperature.

The proportions are approximately 30% new oak (Bordeaux barrels), 30% barrels that have held one or two vintages, and 30% 40-hectoliter casks.
After ageing, the wines are bottled at the Château.

The wines

Château Bellefont Belcier

Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé

Deep garnet-purple in color. Sexy and floral character. Striking freshness to play off the rich, dark flavors. Polished tannins that adds to all the ripe red berries and liquorice. Lingering earthiness and minerality to the finish.

Les Tours de Belcier

Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Discreet hints of caramel and toasted bread. Dense ripe tannins, concentrated and loaded with mature fruits, crushed strawberries, blackberries, licorice. Good combination of elegance and power. Despite the fact that it’s a recent vintage, the wine has a very good drinkability already.
