La Patache

The Estate

A wide variety and complexity

In 2012, Peter Kwok and his son Howard acquired Château La Patache. The property is located in Pomerol at the locality la Patache and consists of 3.18 hectares spreading over nine plots. The plots are located on soils of a wide variety and complexity - soil composed of fine gravels with crasse de fer and clay in the subsoil.

La Patache is a locality on the national road 89 (Bordeaux-Lyon), whose name evokes this kind of coaches which went there in ancient times. Indeed, in the nineteenth century, « les pataches » were horse carriages that served as stagecoach in the countryside. The locality La Patache in Pomerol can be found on the first Napoleonic maps.

The original stone buildings were in fact a former post office at the entrance of Libourne. It is in the renovated stables that we installed a modern winery and cellars in 2012. The old post office building has been retrofited into a barrel cellar.

Vinification & Ageing

Meticulous selection and vinification intégrale

Harvest dates vary by vintage and we adapt our harvest plan down to the plot or even to the parcel based on the optimum ripeness of the berries. Our team determine when to harvest through a combination of several physiological and subjective criteria, and even tasting berries by mouth is an important step in the decision-making process. Our team select which parcel block to pick by-hand only the night before. After a meticulous selection process on the vines and in the winery, the sorted grapes are filled into concrete tanks or directly into Bordeaux barrels (about 75% of the harvest). This follows the method of Vinification Intégrale. Our team is always present at the opening and closing of barrels by our cooper partners for better quality control.

The vatting process lasts 30 days, operating a gentle extraction with pigeages in tank and stirring in barrel. The juices are tasted daily in order to protect the expression of our fruit. These tastings allow us to determine the day for the running off and pressing of the grape marcs. The resulting juice is placed then in barrels for malolactic fermentation. Château La Patache wines are aged in the same barrels for 15 to 18 months at constant temperature in our wine cellar. Depending on the vintage, the proportion of new oak varies between 30 to 40%, with the balance using 1 and 2 years old barrels.  After ageing the wines are bottled at the Château.

Château La Patache

Pomerol

Château La Patache has a garnet nearly ruby red colour with beautiful depth. The first nose surprises with orange zest and truffles. After circular movement of the glass, come mingle with these first notes a complete palette of red fruit like strawberry and raspberry along with flavors of balsamic and liquorice with violet hints. In the mouth, a beautiful fresh attack developing the fruit. The tannins are still firm but well-integrated. The long finish gives the impression of crunching in red fruit.
